Add medication to the system to start signing them off in the Carer App. This can be done by an admin or senior that has medication permissions. To add medication to a client’s eMAR, follow these steps:

Step 1: Click 'Add medication', the button located in the top right corner

In your client's profile, click on 'Medication' and open their MAR chart. In the top right corner, you'll then find a button 'Add Medication'.

Step 2: Search for the medication

Start typing in the name of the medication into the search box and options for medication will appear. Once you've found the correct medication, click 'Next Step'.

The list of medications is from the NHS dm+d database. If you're having any trouble finding the right medication please get in touch with the Support team or add a custom medication by scrolling all the way down in the search bar.

Step 3: Update the medication scheduling time (if applicable)

A scheduled medication will need to be signed at a certain time, however, a not scheduled medication can be signed at any time.

Step 4: Schedule when medication needs to be administered

Choose the correct round times for this medication needs. If you need a time that is not shown, click 'Add medication round time' to enter another time.

A) Dose

For each time enter the dose needed. If you need more options, click on 'Settings' and it will open up other dose options. Below is what the different options look like.

B) Start

Before this date the medication will not be shown in the app.

C) Frequency

Choose the correct option for how often this medication needs to be taken. For example, needs to be taken everyday, every other day. If you'd like most custom options e.g. every Monday and Wednesday select 'Custom'.

D) End

This is the last day this medication needs to be administered. For example, if the end date is the 2nd, the medication will appear in the app on the 2nd but not on the 3rd. You can also select an 'ongoing' option if this is an ongoing medication.

E) Cautionary Information

Enter any information that is written on the pharmacy label. This will be shown to the carers whilst they are administering.

Step 5: Add relevant information about the medication

Route

This is taken straight from the NHS database. Feel free to add more or modify if needed.

Requires second signature

If this medication requires a second signature, a witness will be required on the log before it can be saved. Controlled drugs will be automatically set to 'Yes' but you can change this to 'No' if a second signature is not required.

Homely Remedy and Over the Counter

Make a note if this medication is a homely remedy or an over-the-counter medication.

Part of a monitored dosage system?

For example, part of a dosette box or blister packs. If 'Yes' is chosen a blue icon will appear in the app to let carers know that this medication is part of a monitored dosage system.

Description (shape, colour) of medication

For example, white oval. Only enter this information if you are happy to keep it up to date, keeping in mind that descriptions of the medication might change with the brand.

What additional support does this client need with this medication?

This is space to note down anything carers need to be aware of. This can be anything from specific swallowing difficulties with this medication or how best to prepare this medication.

Step 6: Save the medication

You’ll be shown what the medication will look like on the MAR chart and all of the information that you’ve just added. Make sure to double-check all of the medication details before you add them to a client’s profile. If you would like to make any changes at this point, please use the grey arrow on the left hand side to go back and make updates. Once you're happy, select 'Save Medication'.

You’ll now be able to see the medication on the client’s profile and in the Carer App to sign.

Important note:

You are unable to edit or change medication once you have saved it. You will need to discontinue the medication and re-add it if you want to edit or make any changes.
